About us
Los Altos is a family-owned Mexican restaurant rooted in tradition, authenticity, and a deep love for the flavors of Jalisco, Mexico. Named after the region where the founding family’s roots began, Los Altos is a celebration of heritage — a place where fresh, flavorful dishes honor the culinary spirit of Jalisco, known worldwide for its tequila and unforgettable cuisine.
The story behind Los Altos is one of hard work and perseverance. In 1980, a young man left Jalisco for the United States, beginning his journey from the fields of California to a tireman in Chicago. Eventually, he settled in Detroit, Michigan, where he spent 14 years in Mexicantown’s Xochimilco restaurant — rising from dishwasher to kitchen manager. His passion and dedication led to the opening of his very first restaurant, Taqueria Lupitas, in 1995 — just steps away from where it all began.
Five years later, Los Altos opened its doors. Today, both restaurants remain proudly operated by the same family, continuing a legacy of excellence in service and authentic Mexican flavor. Los Altos stands not only as a tribute to Jalisco but as a symbol of hope and support for all immigrants working toward a better future.
